这个名为“A Chinese View on the Farming Issue”的帖子,是针对论坛上另一位北美玩家关于WOW中“FARMING”出现可能性的预测。

A Chinese View on the Farming Issue
Hi, I am a Chinese, I live in Australia.
I’ve played a lot of MMORPG games and I’’m very familiar with the farming issue. Since the server is down now, I will give my 2 cents towards this topic.
In Chinese there’s a famous philosophical phrase: "存在即是合理", meaning "Things exist with proper reasons". That applies to everything legal and leginimate, in which farming is a part of. Just like anything else that exists in this world, farming has both benefits and harms. Its harms are obvious to most experienced game players - it often destroys the game economy, drives casual players away from the game, and ruins some others’ enjoyment. However its benifits are hardly discussed and I will elaborate on that.
Firstly it creates job opportunities. China has a huge population, so even at a low 4.5% unemployment rate, the amount of jobless people in China are still 4 times greater than in USA and 60 times greater than in Australia. Farming companies usually locate in outter city areas, where unemployment rates are higher and jobs are harder to find.
Some people describe the farming companies as "Sweatshops", IMO this is completely inaccurate. The term "Sweatshop" is used to describe factories which hire low paid workers to work long hours in poor conditions. But all farming workers are voluntary, happy and enjoying their tasks. They are mostly young people who love games. Now they get to play the online games for free, plus one free meal a day, and get paid. Their parents won’t complain anymore about them not having a job, and their salaries are actually higher than a lot of other people who do not live in city.
Everyone involve in the farming business are happy. From the workers, to the business owners, to the wholesalers, to the buyers. Business owners only need to spend a small initial investment in purchasing computers, hiring storage and paying electricity/inte
et bills. Then they will have a easy-to-manage, hassle-free business that is profitable and 100% leginimate. So are the wholesalers, who focus on advertising and credibility cumulation to achieve profits.
Finally let’s look at the buyers. They are usually people who don’t have a lot of time playing the game or don’t exactly know how to develop character/money in the game. But just like everyone else, they still want to enjoy the game by owning high end equipments or/and high level character(s). So they benefit from farming, as it gives them what everybody in the world want - happiness.
Now you will probably ask do I support farming or not? Well honestly IMHO, let there be farming in WOW. Because WOW already have a good system that protects the economy. Soul-bind and loot-on-first-hit will prohibit the bad aspects of farming (e.g. looting, camping) and reduce economy deflation to the minimum. So why stop farming at all? Let other people have fun in their own ways and us in our own. Full stop.
P.S. Regarding the racism issue, I think most of the criticism towards Chinese farmers are fair and unbiased. There are a lot of low moral Chinese players, but that does not reflect the rest of the population. And always remember it is not easy for any country to manage a huge population.
